Cool Summer Food

During summer when the weather is hot and the temperature remains high, the body tends to lose a lot of water. If this loss of fluid is not replenished the human body will suffer. In this article we talk about a few cool summer foods that will help you keep the calories down as well as keep you cool. Obviously water is a must for us humans, but there are fruit and veggies with high water content that will keep you feel cool, fresh and hydrated.

Cool Cucumber

Cucumber, a cool summer food idea, contain a high level of potassium almost 450mg in one cup, which helps maintain the mineral balance in your body when you are losing fluids. They are also rich in a lipid component called ‘sterol’ that can help bring down cholestrol levels. This sterol can be found mostly in the skin of the cucumber, so think twice before you peel away valuable nutrition.

Lastly, if you’re on a diet, know that cucumbers are extremely low in calories. When cooking your favourite salads, sandwiches and even raita add cucumber to give it that delicious crunchy taste as well as a cooling effect on your pallette.

Crunchy Lettuce

Lettuce can be found in all markets and major super-markets. We use lettuce in salads and burgers which is great as lettuce has almost 90% water content. Lettuce is best eaten whole or with a salad but it’s best to go easy on any extra dressing. The dressing will reduce the water content.

Tasty Tomato

Another cool summer food idea is the friendly tomato. Tomatoes can be useful for fighting cancer and are also one of the most hydrating vegetables. Tomatoes get their distinctive red colour from a chemical called ‘Lycopene’ which helps protect the skin against UV when you’re out and about during summer. Tomatoes are also high in Vitamin A, which is fat soluble, so adding a small amount of fat in your diet along with tomatoes will enable your body to fully absorb the vitamin.

Juicy Watermelon

Watermelon is my favourite cool summer food idea and instead of guzzling down plain water, some juicy fresh cut watermelon will be just as good. Watermelon is low in calories and has a very high water content. When your at the beach or at a sporting event, the watermelon will be sure to keep you cool and refreshed.

Watermelons are also high in fibre, so if you’re on a diet then watermelon will not only keep you cool but will also make you feel fuller for longer.

Delicious Strawberry

Everyones favourite cool food is the humble strawberry. Not only are they high in water content, the fruit is also packed with Vitamin C, which keeps ligaments strong and hastens skin repair including sun-burns. Strawberries also help fight cancer.

So which of these do you eat to stay cool. Go ahead, let us know what your favourite cool summer food is. We love comments 🙂
